Dear Teacher- This is a Thank You
Find Your Flourish: Mastering Midlife. This is a true view into the daily routine of a 40-something year old woman. My children recently completed their first nine weeks of school for this year. End of the reporting period means parent teacher conferences since we returned to school after two years of home schooling. Usually, my children perform well in school. We have many checks and balances in place like performance rewards, study times, assistance when needed. They work hard and to the best of their ability. As their mom, I like to think they are pretty intelligent…..
Due to my flexible schedule, I am able to attend most events at school. Parent teacher conferences are not any different. Teachers take ten to fifteen minutes of their time to fill you in on how your child is performing in their classes. I actually value these conferences because I always like to hear how my children behave when I am not present. Is everything I am attempting to instill in them at home reflecting well on outside the house. Can they keep it together without my reminders? How organized can they be? Do they volunteer for questions in class?
Many times, we believe that parent teacher conferences should be attended if there is a problem; however I believe that I should attend no matter what type of performance my child is exhibiting. I want to connect with the teacher. I like the teacher to know that I am invested in my child’s learning and that I am not solely relying on them to do it alone. I also like the teacher to be aware that I am aware of their interactions with my child and I want those interactions to be supportive, as well as kind.
I consider my children the most precious individuals in my life. I want them to develop into successful individuals who are giving, caring, and productive. I do not know what they will eventually do once they choose their path in life; however I want to be there supporting them as they grow. Teachers are a significant part of that growth as well. They spend a huge amount of time with my children. They are also a great influence on decisions my children will make based on the interaction they have with them.
Discussions to have with your child’s teacher at parent teacher conferences:
- What do you view as my child’s strengths? How are you able to support them in your classroom?
- What are some concepts that are challenging to my child? How are you able to address those in your classroom?
- How do you view my child’s interactions with you and their peers?
- What can I do to support their learning in this class?
- What can I as a parent do to support you as the teacher?
I am so grateful to teachers. People who have chosen to educate another generation. I know it is a challenge; however there are some who are gifted to do it. I do not take that for granted at all. I do believe that as a society overall we do take educators at all levels for granted. No one would be able to do anything without a teacher somewhere along their path. How could we not support them?
Dear Teacher,
Thank you for your dedication, enthusiasm, and sacrifice to the education of my children. You have a family of your own and children you are raising as well. I thank you for focusing on my child when you are in the classroom with them. I thank you for creating a safe space for them to learn, grow, and be themselves in. I thank you for being full of integrity and for being non-judgmental. I appreciate your excitement about your subject and hope that my child also displays excitement to learn. The gift you have for making learning fun and enjoyable has been helpful for my child. Please let me know if there is anything I can do at anytime to support the learning environment you have created in your classroom. Thank you!
From a grateful parent

Teachers are amazing people and I love to hear how my girl is getting on. We had a parent teacher conference a few weeks ago which went really well and it was so helpful. My girls English teacher got through the latest one without crying. The time before we made her cry because we said how excited my girl is for her lessons and how much of an fantastic teacher she is. She was so grateful. x
Kim- Reading this comment made me so happy. I enjoy hearing about teachers that touch the lives of their students, as well as students that enjoy learning. What a great experience for your daughter to have. I wish more people would thank their teachers. |Shanna|
