How To Optimize Your Bedtime Routine
Find Your Flourish: Mastering Midlife- a true view into the daily routine of a 40-something year old woman.
I always try to maximize different parts of my day. Bedtime is not any different; however bedtime for moms is usually a challenge because we don’t rest until everyone else is sleeping. You can have your ideal night-time plan, but others’ responses to the night affect what is going to happen.
Ways I have optimized our bedtime routine:
- Have dinner served by a certain time everyday- this has become a significant challenge because all 3 of my children are now involved in activities after school. Eating dinner as a family is one of the things that we enjoy and spend time bonding. BUT it is challenging if someone doesn’t want to eat prior to a sports activity and the other one has to be in bed soon after the one playing sports gets home.
- Alarm set on my phone for when it is time to begin the toddler’s bedtime routine. As most moms know, toddler like things how they like it until they don’t. This means doing the same thing every night for establishing a good routine for my toddler, as well as promoting good sleep hygiene.
- Alarm set for my older children for their bedtime because I get involved in things and the time will pass by. And they will stay up as long as you let them.
- Make my bed in the morning because there is nothing like looking at a made up bed and thinking about getting in it.
- Decide what nighttime activity I will do before bed. I know many do not recommend having a television in your room or watching television before you go to sleep, but I do sometimes watch a football game or a show I am currently binge watching or a good movie depending on my mood. I sometimes color in my coloring books. I sometimes do a word search. I sometimes journal. I sometimes plan. I sometimes read a book. I just do something for myself that I enjoy as a wind down.
- I look ahead for tomorrow. I look at my priority list for the next day in order to calm my mind and rest well.
- I pray.

I do have a loose bedtime routine and things I do before bed each night and weekends are less strict with times.
Jenny- Thank you for reading this post. I try to let my times fluctuate as well; however I am more strict with my children’s times so they won’t be cranky the next day. |Shanna|
Great post. Evenings are so busy with cooking and kids’ clubs, aren’t they? I love to watch TV in the evenings too xxx
Claire- Thank you for taking time to check out this post. Busy is currently where we reside! I am currently binge watching a drama when I can stay awake after everyone is asleep. |Shanna|
Now my girls are older I am sometimes in bed before them. I am glad that I don’t have to make sure they’re in bed before I can settle down. hehehe At the moment we are struggling to find time to all eat together but we try.
Kim- Isn’t it difficult to find that time when everyone can eat at the same time? It becomes more challenging as everyone grows and finds their own interests. I am waiting for that time when we are able to sleep before everyone, while still enjoying this current stage we are in. |Shanna|
