Decorative or Functional Planner- Which One are You?

Once you decide that you will plan, you will eventually decide what type of planner you are. This may continue to change as you plan more and more. As you become more consistent with planning, how you interact with your planner and what planner you chose to utilize can change. I have switched planners numerous times. I just always try and give a planner at least 3 months of usage before switching, because I do extensive amount of research before choosing what I will use. Need assistance deciding on planner type. No matter what planner you decide to use, there is always pressure to get all of the items to go with your planner. None of which are necessary for your planner to serve you. Your planner will work just fine with one pen and the paper that comes with it. All other extras are just to help you remain consistent and help maintain your interest in the planner.

Decorative planning

Decorative planning gives you something to look at while you are getting through those challenging days. It gives you something to focus on and brings you back to looking at your planner. You can use stickers to accomplish a look that is personalized to you. There are so many options through craft stores, etsy, and other private sticker shops. You can spend a minuscule amount of money or load up on all types of stickers. Whatever you decide- remember to keep the goal that you are doing this to help you become more organized and focused on accomplishing more throughout your days. 

Stickers are a small part of decorative planning. Many other items exist that can be used in decorative planning. Decorative tape, known as Washi tape, can be used. Various paper clips and charms can change the look of your planner. Planner covers that can be rotated out with the seasons or for special occasions.

Functional planning

This type of planning is what most people think of when they hear the word planning. This is your daytimer. Leather folio with calendar. This is the straight forward way to plan. This works if you do not need a lot frills to hold your interest. 

It is easy to use this type of planning even if you are a decorative planner on those weeks where you are busy but still need to plan. If you are new to planning, functional planning is a great way to begin and get into a flow. It allows you to find your own way in your own planner. Don’t compare how you plan to someone else. Find out what works for you and make planning part of your daily routine.

No additional  items are needed to be a successful planner, but they are in the nice to have category. Have you decided what type of planning style would work best for you? 

This has changed for me several times depending on where I am in my life and what is going on. You can definitely search on YouTube and find different planner styles that resonate with you. Planning has been such an important part of my life for so long that I can not remember I time I was without it. I appreciate what planning can provide me as I move through my daily activities.
