Using the Law of Intentionality to be Great

Law of Intentionality

The Law of Intentionality is based on the premise that in order to make progress and improve yourself, you have to be intentional about it. This law was developed by a leadership guru, John Maxwell. Self improvement does not just happen. Growth is a process that builds upon itself once it is started. It also increases in speed as intention remains.

The Law of Intentionality focuses on action and goals to improve yourself. As you are improving yourself and being intentional about it, you create a greater desire for your improvement. As this desire increases, you begin to accomplish improvement at a greater pace.

Motherhood and Business Laws

Motherhood requires us to be as versatile as possible. We need to have the answers for all sorts of problems in the home setting and be able to interact with all the members of our family. We have to be able to support our family members as they are developing. Business laws are used in the professional space for improvement in proficiency and efficiency. Business laws can also be utilized by moms to improve the efficiency of their home. A previous post looked at the Law of Triviality. This law relates directly to how you can get caught up in the small details and miss the priorities you should be focusing on. Getting distracted by those small details can cause things to take longer than they should.

Mothers are leaders in their home setting. They have to lead with their spouse using compromise and understanding. They have to lead their children by making decisions about what is best for them in their present stage of growth. They lead in their profession as they perform professional tasks. Using the Law of Intentionality can help you make progress towards your goals by remaining focused on those goals and remain intentional about what you need to do for progress.

How to use Law of Intentionality

In your daily life, the law of intentionality can be used to help you to make personal growth in areas where you have identified deficits. Improving yourself is built on a foundation of self discovery. You have to be honest with yourself and look at those characteristics that need to be developed more. This is a difficult process so many people shy away from performing it. A good way to do this is to look at areas of your personality and life in isolation. Addressing everything all together may be overwhelming. Plus, when you address something in your life that needs improvement, the benefits can also go into another area. For example, you keep putting off organizing your closet so you decide to address the closet (FINALLY) and address the personality trait of procrastination. Addressing procrastination in this area will definitely have benefits in the other areas of your life as well.

Threats to the Law of Intentionality

Success is something people can achieve if they are consistent with working towards their goals. Success is not something that can not be handed to you. It is not achieved with great ease. Yes, we all have our giftings, but how do you improve on what you have been given? How do you turn those giftings into something that is beneficial for you? How can you use your talents to help others? If it was easy, everyone would be successful. Choosing to be intentional about your own improvement can require a lot of effort. It can be tiring due to the amount of work involved. Barriers exist that can stop you from making improvements despite your desire to exhibit progress.

Assumption Gap

My success will just happen without any effort from me.

Knowledge Gap

I am not able to learn anything new because I have already reached this level in life.

Timing Gap

This is just not the right time for me to improve in this area.

Mistake Gap

I am afraid that I will not be able to do this correctly.

Perfection Gap

I have to already be a success at something before I try it.

Inspiration Gap

I don’t have to motivation to improve myself in this area at this time.

Comparison Gap

I am not going to be as good as this person I know.

Expectation Gap

I think I should already be good in this area and my progress should occur quickly.

Can you identify one of these barriers in your own life that has resulted in you not intentionally growing?

Affirmations to conquer the gaps of the Law of Intentionality

  • I can have the right energy, effort, and mindset to improve myself.
  • I have the ability to learn new things without difficulty.
  • I am where I need to be at this present moment in my life.
  • I am motivated to reach new levels in my life.
  • I am enough being myself.
  • I am realistic about my progress.

Intentional growth versus going with the flow

As we move forward in life, there are goals and dreams we would like to accomplish. There are areas of our life we want to improve in. Discovering supports that can enhance your progress is a way to carve out a path of success for yourself. There will be times when you do not reach your goals. There will be times where succeeding is challenging. But remaining focused on what you want to accomplish is a way to not let those dreams die and allow you to remain intentional about your actions. This is very different behavior than just letting what happens happen. Everyday things happen around us. It is up to us how we respond and how we allow those events to affect us.
